Starmer Resigns After Finalizing UK-India Trade Agreement

Date:

In a significant diplomatic achievement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has successfully concluded the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) before stepping down from his role. The agreement, formalized during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit 2026, sets July 15 as the date for implementing the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This pact is anticipated to enhance trade relations between the two nations, which currently share an annual trade value of approximately £48 billion.

Starmer, who has been a proponent of strengthening ties with India, prioritized the trade deal during his tenure. He hailed the agreement as a critical driver for economic growth, emphasizing India’s burgeoning influence in the global economy and the advantages of facilitating more accessible and cost-effective trade avenues. Since assuming leadership of the Labour Party in the aftermath of its 2019 electoral defeat, Starmer has endeavored to mend relations with the British Indian community and foster a robust partnership with India. His administration pledged to deepen collaboration with India in various domains, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives.

Before venturing into politics, Starmer had an illustrious career in law, notably serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. His political journey saw him become Prime Minister following Labour’s sweeping victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial achievements in stabilizing the British economy and pushing forward domestic reforms, Starmer’s tenure faced hurdles due to a series of policy challenges and political setbacks, which eventually undermined his standing.

In his resignation speech, Starmer addressed the diminishing confidence within his parliamentary party regarding his leadership. He expressed his acknowledgment of their perspective and accepted their decision with respect and gratitude. His departure marks the conclusion of a notable era in British politics, as he steps down after having left an indelible mark through his significant diplomatic accomplishment with India.
