Nifty, Sensex Drop as Oil Prices Rise Above $100 per Barrel

Date:

Indian stock markets experienced a significant downturn on Monday, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex indices plummeting to their lowest levels in nearly six months. This decline was driven by rising crude oil prices, which surged above $100 a barrel, and diminishing prospects for a diplomatic resolution between the United States and Iran.

The Nifty 50 ended the day with a 1.6% drop, closing at 22,780.25, marking its lowest point since April 2. Similarly, the Sensex fell by 1.5%. The downturn reflected a broader negative sentiment across global markets, as major Asian markets also saw declines.

Brent crude futures reached approximately $107 a barrel, having earlier touched $108.83. Concerns over potential prolonged disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have added to the uncertainty, raising fears about energy supplies and inflation. India, which imports about 90% of its oil needs, faces particular vulnerability as higher crude prices could inflate its import bill, increase inflationary pressures, and impact corporate profit margins and overall economic growth. Additionally, elevated prices for LNG and fertilizers could exacerbate these pressures.

The year-to-date decline for the Nifty has reached around 13%, with the Nifty PSU Bank index down 3.2% and significant losses recorded in realty and oil and gas stocks. The Indian rupee also weakened by 0.2% to 95.9850 against the US dollar.

Adding to the challenges for emerging markets are rising global inflation and increasing US bond yields. The US 10-year Treasury yield is nearing 5%, which has heightened concerns about potential capital outflows and limits the ability of central banks to maintain lower interest rates.

Market participants are closely monitoring the Reserve Bank of India’s upcoming policy review for guidance on interest rates, inflation, and economic growth. The sustained strength in crude oil prices could further pressure the rupee and influence the central bank’s policy decisions.
