Marco Rubio Visits India Amid Trade Tensions with Trump and Modi

Date:

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarked on a significant four-day tour of India on Saturday, aiming to bolster strategic relations and enhance collaboration across various sectors including trade, defense, energy, and technology. His itinerary includes pivotal meetings with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

This visit aligns with the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving foreign ministers from India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. The dialogue is expected to focus on critical issues such as Indo-Pacific security, defense cooperation, and technological advancements in areas like semiconductors and artificial intelligence. These discussions take place against the backdrop of rising concerns about China’s increasing influence in the region.

Trade discussions are anticipated to be a significant topic, particularly in light of the tensions arising from former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on Indian exports. Both nations are likely to explore avenues for enhancing economic ties and mitigating trade-related issues. Additionally, energy security will be a focal point, with the United States aiming to boost its exports of crude oil and LNG to India, while also addressing India’s acquisition of discounted Russian oil.

Defense collaboration is expected to remain a cornerstone of the bilateral talks. India currently utilizes several US-manufactured defense systems, including Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft, MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, M777 howitzers, and C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft. Discussions are likely to delve into joint production initiatives and cooperation in advanced defense and space technologies.

Throughout his visit, Rubio will explore various Indian cities, including Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In Kolkata, he plans to visit the Missionaries of Charity headquarters, an organization founded by Mother Teresa, highlighting his engagement with India’s cultural and humanitarian facets.
