The internal crisis within Shiv Sena (UBT) has deepened as two of its Lok Sabha members, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, have shifted allegiance to the faction led by Eknath Shinde. This development marks a significant strengthening of the revolt against Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, with a total of six MPs now siding with the dissident camp.
Nagesh Patil Ashtikar explained that his decision to move was influenced by the inadequate development funds for his constituency and increasing dissatisfaction with derogatory remarks aimed at rebel MPs. He emphasized his continued commitment to Shiv Sena’s core ideology, clarifying that his switch was merely from one faction to another, with the aim of better serving his constituents.
Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, while confirming his shift, mentioned that he would keep consulting his supporters before finalizing his political plans. He assured that he would refrain from criticizing Uddhav Thackeray or Aaditya Thackeray amidst the ongoing turmoil. His stance reflects a cautious approach amidst the charged political atmosphere.
In response to these defections, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that some rebel MPs are still in touch with their original party, expressing concern about potential backlash from voters in their constituencies. He indicated that the party is willing to engage in dialogue with those considering a return. Meanwhile, the Thackeray-led faction has initiated disciplinary actions against the defectors, issuing show-cause notices and cautioning them about possible consequences under the anti-defection law. The party is also contemplating seeking the disqualification of these MPs through the Lok Sabha Speaker if they do not comply.
This rebellion has escalated political tensions in Maharashtra, with accusations being hurled from both sides. Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has denied any involvement in prompting the defections, despite allegations suggesting otherwise. The unfolding situation highlights the fragility and complexity within the state’s political landscape.
