US Warns Nations of Harsh Sanctions for Trading with Iran

Date:

The United States is ramping up its pressure campaign against Iran by threatening significant sanctions on countries and companies that continue economic engagements with Tehran. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the US aims to target those entities involved in transactions that enable Iran to generate income, specifically highlighting those facilitating the sale of Iranian oil or other financial activities. Entities persisting in business dealings with Iran could face deadlines to sever these ties or risk facing US-imposed sanctions.

This latest move by Washington has sparked concerns about potential tensions with China, Iran’s most significant trading partner and a key buyer of its oil. China has consistently opposed the US’s pressure tactics, advocating for political and diplomatic solutions instead of punitive measures. Meanwhile, Iran has responded with threats of retaliation, indicating that countries participating in the US-led campaign could face military or cyber responses.

The US’s intensified actions occur amidst ongoing disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and activities in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy supply route. The US has employed economic sanctions to curtail Iranian oil exports, while Iran has maintained pressure on maritime traffic through this strategic waterway. US officials have stated that the economic sanctions are intended to compel Tehran to shift its policies after previous military strategies failed to meet broader US objectives, although they have not ruled out the possibility of further military actions.

The impact of the US’s threat is already evident in Iran’s trading relationships. The United Arab Emirates has announced a suspension of trade ties with Iran, complying with the US’s demands. However, Turkey, another significant trading partner of Iran, has not yet disclosed its stance or response to the latest US measures.
