In a significant political move, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati has once again expelled her nephew Akash Anand from the party, just days after relieving him of his role as chief national coordinator. This action follows the retirement announcement of Anand’s father-in-law, Ashok Siddharth, from active politics. Previously, Mayawati had suggested that Akash could return to a party role if Siddharth retired, but she has now clarified that Anand is entirely free from any BSP responsibilities.
Mayawati criticized both Siddharth and Anand, accusing them of prioritizing their personal and familial interests over the party and its Ambedkarite mission. She pointed to Siddharth’s delayed retirement as evidence that his intentions remained unchanged and questioned Anand’s commitment to the BSP cause. This expulsion marks yet another reversal for Anand, who has faced a tumultuous relationship with the party. Initially removed from his national coordinator role in May 2024 due to controversy during the Lok Sabha election campaign, Anand was later reinstated and reassumed the coordinator position in May 2025.
Last week, Mayawati expressed her concerns about Anand’s maturity, stating he was not yet ready for significant organizational duties. Meanwhile, she introduced her younger nephew, Ishan Anand, to senior party members, indicating a potential shift in the party’s future leadership dynamics. Akash Anand had been groomed as her successor for several years, initially appointed as national coordinator in 2019 and designated her political heir in December 2023. His recent expulsion comes at a critical time as the BSP gears up for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, following Anand’s recent participation in rallies at Hathras and Gautam Buddha Nagar.
Despite internal calls for a younger leadership within the BSP, Mayawati, aged 70, has reaffirmed her commitment to leading the party. She has stated her intention to oversee candidate selection, manage the election campaign, and spearhead fundraising efforts for the upcoming 2027 polls. This latest development underscores the ongoing challenges and leadership dynamics within the BSP as it navigates its strategies for future elections.
