Malaysia Requests Nepal’s Consent to Send DNA Experts for Disaster ID

Date:

Malaysia is poised to deploy a team of DNA experts to Nepal to assist in identifying victims of recent catastrophic floods and landslides, pending approval from Nepalese authorities. According to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, the specialists are ready to commence DNA identification once search and rescue missions in the affected areas are concluded. The process involves comparing DNA from recovered bodies with samples taken from families of missing Malaysians.

In preparation for this mission, Malaysia has gathered DNA samples from relatives of 55 Malaysians who are still missing after the natural disasters. The urgency of the situation led to some bodies being buried swiftly due to limited facilities, underscoring the necessity of DNA testing for proper identification.

The Malaysian team comprises 11 personnel and is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of essential rescue gear. This includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized tunnel-rescue equipment, ensuring they are well-prepared for the complex operation. Additionally, the team has brought a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their efforts.

Malaysia is hopeful that the combined efforts of search, rescue, and DNA identification will not only locate the missing victims but also provide the families with much-needed confirmation regarding their loved ones’ fate. The initiative reflects Malaysia’s commitment to assisting in the aftermath of the disasters and ensuring that families receive closure.
