Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has confirmed the launch of the Yamuna ferry service, named “Namo Yamuna,” just before the Chhath Puja festivities, which span from November 13 to 16. The service aims to enhance the celebration experience and promote the Yamuna river as a key cultural and recreational site.
The ferry service will cover a five-kilometer stretch of the Yamuna River, offering a one-hour cruise between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. Passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy scenic views of the ghats and the natural landscape along the riverbanks. The tickets for this service are expected to be priced at approximately ₹500 per person.
Gupta, during her recent visit to the Sonia Vihar Sports Club and the Sur Ghat, where Chhath Puja celebrations will be held, emphasized the development of the area as a family-friendly picnic destination. The initiative seeks to attract visitors not only for the religious significance but also for leisure activities along the riverside.
The “Namo Yamuna” ferry service, featuring the Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. The 40-foot catamaran-style vessel is designed for stability and is well-suited for navigating the shallow sections of the river. The service’s infrastructure will include boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas to accommodate passengers.
Originally slated for a February 20 launch, the ferry service was delayed due to incomplete project work. The Delhi government now anticipates that the service will be operational in time for the Chhath Puja, offering a new dimension to the celebrations and promoting the Yamuna as a vibrant cultural and recreational hub.
