India has joined several countries, including the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Barbados, and Kenya, to launch the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) platform. This initiative, unveiled during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, aims to bolster multilateral cooperation and advocate for the reform of global institutions.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of stronger multilateral collaboration in light of current geopolitical tensions and conflicts. He stressed the importance of fostering participatory discourse and transparency in decision-making processes within international bodies.
The P4M platform focuses on reforming the multilateral system to enhance its effectiveness, representation, and inclusivity. The founding members also pledged to collaborate on critical global issues such as sustainable development, fair trade, international security, and digital transformation, alongside addressing climate change and pandemic preparedness.
Key areas highlighted for international cooperation include development finance, resilient supply chains, emerging technologies, and counterterrorism. The P4M declaration underscores the need for joint action in these domains, demonstrating a commitment to comprehensive global engagement.
To facilitate these efforts, the countries involved have agreed to establish a coordination mechanism and prioritize areas for collective action, keeping the platform open to other nations wishing to reinforce multilateral ties.
