India’s ambitious infrastructure expansion is dramatically cutting travel times across the country, enhancing connectivity between major cities and remote areas. According to a government factsheet, the newly constructed Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has reduced the road journey between the two cities to approximately 12 hours, down from the previous 33-hour trip.
Other significant projects are also making travel more efficient. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway now allows commuters to reach their destination in about 50 minutes instead of 2.5 hours, while the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway has cut travel time from nearly three hours to around 75 minutes. The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor has shortened the journey to approximately 2.5 hours from over six hours.
Bridges and tunnels are playing a critical role in improving regional connectivity, especially in the Northeast. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu has decreased travel time between parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to just one hour. In Bihar, the Kosi Rail Mahasetu has slashed rail travel between Nirmali and Saraigarh from eight hours to about 30 minutes. Mountain tunnels like the Atal Tunnel and the Banihal-Qazigund tunnel have also significantly cut journey times in mountainous regions.
Modern rail services, including the introduction of Vande Bharat trains, are further accelerating travel times. The New Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat service takes around eight hours, offering a faster alternative to traditional trains. The Katra-Srinagar service now completes in approximately three hours, with other routes like Banaras-Khajuraho and Ernakulam-Bengaluru also showing considerable time savings. Improvements in the railway timetable for 2026 are expected to enhance speeds for 549 trains.
Looking ahead, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor promises to revolutionize travel between the two cities. Expected to be operational by August 2027, this bullet train project will cover 508 kilometers in about 1 hour 58 minutes, dramatically reducing the current eight to nine-hour road journey. This corridor will also feature a unique 7-kilometer undersea tunnel beneath Thane Creek.
These infrastructure advancements are part of a broader strategy to enhance regional connectivity and provide faster transportation options, underscoring India’s commitment to modernizing its transportation network.
