Interpreter Mistake Leads to Takaichi’s Controversial ‘Beautiful Sister’ Comment in India

Date:

An interpretation error led to a misunderstanding at a joint press conference in New Delhi, where Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi mistakenly quoted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as referring to her as his “beautiful sister.” This was clarified by the Japanese government, which explained that the error occurred during the translation process. On July 2, Modi had initially called Takaichi “my sister” in Hindi, which was translated into English as “my younger sister.” However, when relayed into Japanese, the term was incorrectly interpreted as “beautiful sister.”

The mistake arose from the complexities of simultaneous relay interpretation across multiple languages. Prime Minister Takaichi, believing the translation she received was accurate, reiterated the phrase during the press conference and mentioned their mutual agreement to maintain a sibling-like relationship. This misinterpretation, however, was not intended and was merely a result of the intricate translation process.

Japanese officials have since confirmed that this error has not strained the diplomatic relations between Japan and India. The Indian government has not expressed any concerns regarding the mistranslation, indicating that the incident is not seen as significant in the broader context of their bilateral relationship.

Such interpretation errors highlight the challenges faced in international diplomacy, where subtle nuances in language can sometimes lead to unintended messages. Both governments have recognized the mistake as a technical issue rather than a diplomatic one, ensuring that the relations between the two nations remain unaffected.
