Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia soon, aiming to strengthen India’s ties with one of its key partners in the Indo-Pacific region. This visit is anticipated to enhance the strategic, economic, and maritime collaboration between the two nations. Both India and Indonesia, which are the largest democracies in the Indo-Pacific and members of the G20, are keen to broaden their cooperation across several sectors such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defense, and maritime security.
Modi’s visit comes on the heels of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s trip to India in January 2025, a significant occasion where the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations. During that visit, they signed key agreements in health, digital cooperation, maritime security, and cultural exchanges. Despite their strong historical ties, bilateral trade stands at approximately $30 billion, and both nations are eager to tap into greater economic opportunities. India is particularly interested in increasing its investments in Indonesia in areas like critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security.
A focal point of this visit will be digital collaboration, with Indonesia expressing interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives. The two countries are exploring joint ventures in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses, which could significantly boost their economic relationship.
Maritime security is expected to be another major area of focus, with plans to enhance cooperation in the strategically important Strait of Malacca. Both nations aim to improve naval collaboration, maritime domain awareness, and expand defense-industrial partnerships. Indonesia’s efforts to diversify its defense suppliers could open up new avenues for India’s defense sector.
Moreover, the visit is anticipated to foster stronger people-to-people connections through enhanced academic, business, and cultural partnerships. This could pave the way for a more comprehensive and enduring relationship between India and Indonesia, building on their shared interests and mutual goals in the region.
