Japan, India Boost Security, Trade, and Tech Ties in New Partnership

Date:

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have pledged to enhance collaboration in security, economic resilience, and advanced technologies during their recent summit in New Delhi. The leaders emphasized their dedication to maintaining a free and rules-based Indo-Pacific region and voiced their concerns about economic coercion and regional developments in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

The summit resulted in an agreement to bolster supply chains, particularly focusing on strategic sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals. This initiative aims to ensure stability and resilience in the face of global supply challenges. The leaders also committed to expanding joint military exercises and improving cooperation on naval vessel maintenance and defense equipment development. Later this year, a “two-plus-two” meeting involving foreign and defense ministers from both nations is scheduled to further these discussions.

On the economic front, a significant outcome of the summit was the signing of 129 memorandums of understanding between Japanese and Indian companies. These agreements cover investments amounting to approximately ¥2 trillion ($12.4 billion) and span various sectors, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, automotive manufacturing, and advanced technologies.

Further strengthening their technological partnership, Japan and India agreed to intensify their cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. A key objective of this collaboration is to bring 500 Indian AI specialists to Japan by 2030 to foster joint research and innovation. This initiative highlights the growing synergy between the two nations in emerging technological fields.
