India Pursues Minerals Deal as Modi Plans Indonesia Visit

Date:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia next week for discussions with President Prabowo Subianto, with a primary focus on enhancing cooperation in the critical minerals sector. Indian Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty highlighted that the two nations are negotiating several memorandums of understanding in areas such as critical minerals, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, education, and space.

During Modi’s visit, some agreements are anticipated to be finalized, although others are still in the negotiation phase. India is particularly interested in strengthening its collaboration with Indonesia to boost critical mineral processing and manufacturing capabilities. The potential partnership aims to develop production facilities in Indonesia, which would ensure a steady supply for both the Indian market and international exports. Talks are also ongoing regarding possible joint ventures with Indonesian collaborators.

Indonesia’s position as the world’s largest nickel producer makes it an attractive strategic partner for countries looking to secure critical mineral supplies, particularly those needed for electric vehicles, batteries, and other advanced technologies. The Indonesian government mandates that nickel be processed domestically before it is exported, which is designed to attract investment into downstream industries.

This visit underscores India’s broader strategy to fortify its critical mineral supply chains and lessen reliance on external sources. At the same time, it aims to deepen economic ties with Indonesia, leveraging the Southeast Asian nation’s resources and strategic position.
