India is progressing with its plans to procure five more S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia, as Moscow has submitted a cost proposal to initiate discussions with New Delhi. The acquisition aims to bolster India’s air defence capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector facing China. The Cabinet Committee on Security will make the final decision once the price negotiations are concluded and the Finance Ministry grants approval. India’s initial contract for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is set to be fulfilled with the delivery of the last system by November 2026.
The proposed expansion of India’s S-400 arsenal is driven by the system’s significant role during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, which showcased its effectiveness in enhancing air defence operations. This performance has reinforced India’s decision to consider increasing its S-400 fleet, aligning with strategic goals to strengthen its defence posture amidst regional tensions.
While the S-400 deal is advancing, India has yet to reach a decision regarding the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force has shown interest in acquiring these aircraft, particularly in light of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet. However, discussions regarding this acquisition remain ongoing.
The S-400 acquisition is expected to be a key topic in the broader defence discussions between India and Russia. These talks are anticipated to gain further momentum with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit scheduled for September. This visit could provide an opportunity to deepen defence cooperation between the two nations.
