Bank of England Chief Warns AI Threatens Global Economic Stability

Date:

The global financial system could face significant threats from advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems, warned Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey. In a communication addressed to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey expressed concerns that these increasingly autonomous AI models could potentially trigger a major economic downturn. His warning highlights the urgent need for international collaboration to manage the development and deployment of such technologies safely.

Bailey, who also leads the Financial Stability Board, highlighted the risks associated with AI-enabled cyberattacks. He emphasized that these attacks could quickly propagate across nations, causing disruptions in interconnected financial markets. With many nations lacking sufficient protocols to manage these risks, Bailey called for stronger international cooperation to address this growing challenge.

Cyber risk, according to Bailey, is an immediate concern. Advanced AI systems have the capability to increase the speed, scale, and financial impact of cyber threats. Moreover, the substantial reliance on concentrated technology and third-party service providers could exacerbate the potential for widespread system disruptions.

Another critical issue raised by Bailey is the vulnerability of markets to a financial shock due to high asset valuations and increasing leverage in bond and equity markets. He pointed out that the strong investor optimism surrounding AI could lead to a sharp market correction if expectations shift suddenly. This scenario underscores the need for financial authorities to be vigilant and proactive in managing AI-related risks.

In conclusion, Bailey urged financial authorities worldwide to coordinate their efforts to bolster the resilience of the global financial system. By taking these steps, they can mitigate the risks posed by the rapid advancement of AI and ensure the stability of financial markets in the face of potential shocks.
