Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind amidst a significant leadership overhaul at the AI research unit. Hassabis, a co-founder of DeepMind in 2010, will transition to the role of chair and assume new responsibilities as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This shift allows Hassabis to move away from daily management and dedicate more time to long-term AI research and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence.
Taking over the helm at DeepMind will be the current chief technology officer, Koray Kavukcuoglu, who will become the senior vice-president in charge of the organization. Hassabis expressed that this change would enable him to focus on the broader development of advanced AI technologies, with a particular emphasis on ensuring these developments are beneficial to humanity. He will concurrently maintain his position as CEO of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery entity born out of DeepMind.
The leadership transition coincides with the departure of key figures in Google’s AI team. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to start a new venture named Discovery Loop, which will concentrate on machine learning and research in science and engineering fields. These exits occur as competition within the AI sector becomes increasingly fierce.
Google is facing robust challenges from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have made notable strides in AI models and coding technologies.
