WhatsApp Introduces Usernames Allowing Chats Without Sharing Phone Numbers

Date:

WhatsApp is introducing a significant privacy enhancement that allows users to utilize usernames for communication instead of phone numbers. This shift is expected to transform interactions on the platform by enabling users to initiate chats without disclosing their mobile numbers. The rollout of this feature is happening gradually, with users currently able to reserve unique usernames in anticipation of a complete global release anticipated later this year.

To construct a username, users can choose a distinctive handle within the app, and those wishing to message them will only need to know this username. In instances where a desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp will offer alternative suggestions through an integrated generator. Notably, there will be no public directory for usernames, ensuring that users can only be contacted by those who already know their exact username, thus enhancing privacy.

Users eager to secure their preferred usernames can do so by updating the WhatsApp app and navigating to the settings menu: Settings → Account → Username. The platform will alert users once the feature is available in their specific region. Given the app’s vast user base, early reservations are encouraged as popular usernames are expected to be in high demand.

Adding an extra layer of security, the system will feature an optional “username key.” This key can be shared separately, providing users greater control over who can initiate conversations with them. This added protection is designed to benefit a wide range of users, including personal users, creators, businesses, and public accounts. It also allows some users to synchronize their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

While the introduction of usernames marks a notable change, WhatsApp has confirmed that this feature is optional. Users who prefer the traditional method of using phone numbers can continue to do so. Notifications regarding the availability of the username feature will appear in-app as it becomes accessible in different regions.
