Syed Asim Waqar Leaves AIMIM to Join Congress Before UP Elections

Date:

In a significant political shift ahead of next year’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Syed Asim Waqar, a notable figure and national spokesperson for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has joined the Congress party. Waqar’s induction into Congress took place at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi, where he was welcomed by key figures including Rajendra Pal Gautam, who is in charge of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, the state Congress president Ajay Rai, and Imran Pratapgarhi, chairman of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Minority Department.

Waqar’s decision to switch allegiances has been accompanied by sharp criticism of his former party, AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi. Waqar accused AIMIM of undermining the opposition’s efforts to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming the party often targets Congress, the Samajwadi Party, and other opposition factions instead of the BJP. He expressed that for the opposition to succeed, there needs to be a unified front with a clear aim of defeating the ruling BJP, and he sees Congress and Rahul Gandhi as the central force capable of mounting a national challenge against them.

His departure from AIMIM, where he had been an influential voice and was perceived as close to Owaisi, occurs as the party is strategizing to broaden its influence in Uttar Pradesh in anticipation of the 2027 Assembly elections. Waqar’s move to Congress could potentially bolster the party’s position in consolidating opposition support in the region, though the actual impact on the upcoming elections remains to be seen.

While the defection marks a noteworthy shift in political allegiances, the full extent of its consequences for the electoral landscape in Uttar Pradesh is uncertain. Waqar’s criticism of AIMIM suggests a strategic realignment aimed at strengthening the opposition’s capacity to challenge the BJP, underscoring the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of political alliances in the lead-up to crucial state elections.
