India and Poland to Strengthen Cooperation in Defence and Advanced Technologies

Date:

India and Poland have committed to bolstering their cooperation in several strategic sectors, including defence, space, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This agreement was reached during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, with a shared objective to expand economic ties and double bilateral trade by 2030.

The leaders emphasized the potential for joint development and production in crucial areas such as defence equipment, space technology, and nuclear energy. They also touched on collaboration in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and financial technology. Modi extended an invitation to Polish companies to partner with India in co-development and co-production efforts, while Tusk highlighted the need for diversifying access to critical minerals to enhance economic security.

Currently, bilateral trade between India and Poland stands at approximately $6.3 billion, with ambitions to increase this figure significantly by the end of the decade. As part of these efforts, a delegation of nearly 100 Polish companies is exploring opportunities in various sectors, including defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, infrastructure, and technology.

Plans are also in place to establish a bilateral startup bridge and foster partnerships in critical minerals and coal gasification. Indian officials anticipate that a future India-European Union trade agreement could further open avenues for exports and investment. Defence cooperation remains a priority, with both countries exploring an agreement on the protection and exchange of classified information to facilitate closer defence-industrial collaboration.

Additionally, India and Poland are considering opportunities for the joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies. The discussions also covered regional and international issues, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Modi reiterating India’s support for diplomatic efforts to achieve peace and Polish officials welcoming India’s advocacy for a negotiated solution.

The meeting underscored longstanding people-to-people connections, including Poland’s support to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and historical ties from the Second World War. This enhanced cooperation marks a significant step in strengthening India-Poland relations, focusing on expanding trade, enhancing strategic partnerships, and building resilient supply chains.
