BJP to Hold Rallies in Assam Opposing Congress’s Approach to Democratic Institutions

Date:

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold rallies across Assam from October 13 to October 31. The rallies are intended to counter what the BJP describes as Congress’s attempts to undermine democratic institutions. Sarma made this announcement during a press briefing in Guwahati.

Sarma stated that these rallies will be conducted peacefully at district headquarters, aiming to demonstrate support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bolster public confidence in constitutional institutions. He accused the Congress party and other opposition groups of challenging institutions such as the Election Commission and the Supreme Court for political motives.

The Assam Chief Minister also criticized Congress’s stance on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that the process is crucial for addressing issues related to voter lists and illegal immigration in the state. Sarma targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of having inconsistent standards regarding election outcomes depending on the victorious party. He also condemned Gandhi’s actions towards the Supreme Court, emphasizing that constitutional institutions should remain free from political influence.

The BJP clarified that the aim of these rallies is to support democratic institutions and oppose Congress’s approach to electoral and constitutional matters. This announcement comes amid ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress over issues related to electoral processes, institutional independence, and immigration in Assam.
