Kiren Rijiju, India’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, recently traveled to Doha to extend India’s condolences following the demise of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. While in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, delivering condolences on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During this meeting, Rijiju paid tribute to the late Father Amir, describing him as a visionary leader whose efforts significantly contributed to Qatar’s development and the strengthening of strategic ties between India and Qatar.
The Indian community in Qatar has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Sheikh Hamad, recalling his contributions with deep respect. Prime Minister Modi also lauded the late Father Amir, recognizing him as a true friend of India who played a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.
In a gesture of respect and solidarity, India observed a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026. On this day, the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and official entertainment was suspended as a tribute to the Father Amir.
