PM Modi Calls for Calm, Productive Parliament Session in New Appeal

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged lawmakers on Monday to prioritize meaningful discussions over disruptions during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which will continue until August 13. Emphasizing the need for a productive session, Modi likened the workings of Parliament to the monsoon season, stating that both should be “proactive and productive” to benefit the nation.

Addressing members of both Houses, Modi underscored the importance of engaging in debates supported by strong arguments and facts, suggesting that such an approach would eliminate the need for contentious disruptions. He highlighted India’s recent milestones, particularly its advancements on the global stage and in the space sector. He applauded the achievements of private space startup Skyroot Aerospace, noting the youthful dynamism of its team, with an average age of just 28 years.

In a veiled reference to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Modi remarked on the contributions of young people, pointedly distinguishing them from “a 56-year-old youth.” This comment seemed to underscore the prime minister’s focus on the younger generation’s role in propelling India forward, particularly in fields like space and technology, which reflect their aspirations and capabilities.

The session is poised to tackle several significant legislative proposals, including amendments related to foreign funding regulations, taxation, higher education, judicial reforms, and the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises. Among these is a notable bill proposing to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India, a move aimed at alleviating the backlog of cases in the judiciary.

This Monsoon Session is expected to be marked by vigorous political debate as the government seeks to advance its reform agenda while the opposition is set to bring several national issues to the forefront. As both sides prepare for an intense session, the prime minister’s call for constructive discourse sets the tone for the weeks ahead.
