In a bid to bolster economic ties, India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Riikka Purra, as well as Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto. The meetings aimed to advance trade and investment relations between India and Finland, focusing on enhancing cooperation in several pivotal sectors.
The dialogues delved into expanding collaboration in areas such as digitalisation, innovation, research and development, and fostering startups. Both nations expressed interest in strengthening business partnerships, while also exploring prospects in emerging technologies. These include advancements in artificial intelligence, 6G networks, quantum technologies, semiconductors, and space. Sustainability was also a significant topic of interest in the talks.
A central theme of the discussions was the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Officials from both countries examined how this agreement could serve to amplify bilateral trade, attract investments, and unlock new business opportunities. The FTA is seen as a critical component in enhancing economic interactions between India and the European Union.
The meetings between Indian and Finnish leaders come at a time when India and the EU are actively negotiating a comprehensive trade agreement. This agreement is anticipated to fortify economic relations and promote collaboration across various strategic sectors, reflecting a mutual commitment to deepening ties between the regions.
