Japan is entering a period of political transition after Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced he is stepping aside. His resignation, after less than a year in office, concludes a difficult chapter for the ruling LDP and begins the process of finding new leadership.
Ishiba’s time as prime minister was defined by the struggle to govern without a parliamentary majority. After losing control of both the lower and upper houses in separate elections, his administration was severely weakened, leading to a crisis of leadership.
In his resignation statement, Ishiba said he was leaving to “make way for the next generation” and to take responsibility for the party’s recent failures. The move was widely seen as necessary to prevent a destructive internal power struggle within the LDP.
This transition period will culminate in an early October leadership election. The chosen successor will become prime minister and will be immediately tasked with stabilizing the political situation and addressing the country’s pressing economic and social issues.
