Nana Patekar, a legendary figure in Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. Known for his intense and unconventional performances, Patekar’s career spanned nearly five decades, redefining the role of a Bollywood hero and leaving an indelible impact on both Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he began his journey in the film industry with the 1978 Hindi film “Gaman” and later appeared in several Marathi productions. His breakthrough came with his performance in “Aaj Ki Awaz” (1984), while “Ankush” (1986) solidified his reputation for portraying complex, emotionally intense characters. Patekar’s role in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” gained widespread acclaim and his performance in “Parinda” earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Transitioning from supporting roles, Patekar established himself as a leading actor with films like “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” the latter of which earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. His directorial debut, “Prahaar” (1991), showcased his versatility and gained a dedicated following. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he seamlessly moved between leading roles and supporting performances, displaying a range that made him difficult to categorize.
Patekar’s versatility extended beyond drama and action; his role as Uday Shetty in the 2007 comedy “Welcome” highlighted his exceptional comic timing. He also starred in films such as “Bluffmaster!,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” and “Hattrick,” as well as notable works like “Ab Tak Chhappan,” “Rajneeti,” and the Marathi film “Natsamrat.”
His career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta renewed allegations of sexual harassment related to the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied these claims, and Mumbai police later filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. The controversy contributed to the broader #MeToo movement discussions in India.
Despite these challenges, Patekar remained celebrated for his distinctive acting style, characterized by intensity and authenticity. His contributions to cinema influenced generations of performers and secured his place among India’s most distinctive and revered actors.
