India and Switzerland have strengthened their bilateral ties by signing five agreements focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, mobility, and technology. The agreements were signed on Monday following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin. These discussions aimed at expanding collaboration in various sectors including trade, defense, nuclear energy, technology, and investment.
The newly signed agreements cover areas such as migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. Both countries have committed to improving market access for Indian exports and encouraging greater Swiss investment. India anticipates that increased access to Swiss markets will boost its exports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. In return, Swiss companies are being encouraged to invest in fields like biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.
A key component of the agreements is the migration and mobility partnership, designed to enhance cooperation while addressing issues such as irregular migration and human trafficking. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas lasting up to five years and renewable permits for students. Additionally, an agreement facilitating the exchange of young professionals will allow up to 300 individuals from each country annually to take up temporary employment, gaining professional and language experience.
In the defense and technology sectors, India and Switzerland have agreed to explore greater cooperation in military exchanges, defense production, and nuclear energy. The countries also plan to initiate joint research projects in areas like health, clean energy, and space, and promote collaboration in transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, and electric vehicles.
The agreements are anticipated to bolster collaboration between research institutions, businesses, and technology companies in both nations. Concurrently, discussions between the two leaders addressed global and regional issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, with both sides advocating for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to foster peace and stability.
This development marks a significant step as Switzerland celebrates the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, designed to enhance investment, trade, and employment between India and the EFTA countries.
