Art Deco Gem Reborn: Aberdeenshire’s Tarlair Lido Makes Grand Return

After decades of disuse and a monumental £2 million restoration, Aberdeenshire’s iconic Tarlair Lido has officially reopened its pavilion, sparking excitement for a full return to its former glory. The stunning mint-and-cream Art Deco structure, originally commissioned in 1929, once again stands as a testament to its architectural heritage, offering breathtaking views of the northerly horizon from its newly appointed roof terrace.
The reopening marks the culmination of a decade-long effort by the dedicated “Friends of Tarlair” volunteer group, who battled numerous obstacles to secure funding and preserve this A-list property. Their perseverance, in the face of suggestions ranging from turning the lido into a lobster hatchery to doing nothing at all, has breathed new life into a beloved community landmark.
While the pavilion is now a vibrant hub for visitors, the lido’s three tidal-fed saltwater pools eagerly await their own comprehensive restoration. Planning permission for the pools’ revival is slated for submission this summer, promising that future generations will soon be able to experience the joy of swimming in this unique coastal haven, just as locals did for decades.
