Thailand Revokes 60-Day Visa-Free Access for Indian Tourists

Date:

Thailand is set to tighten its visa regulations, ending the temporary 60-day visa-free entry policy that had been available to travelers from various countries, including India. This shift signals a return to more stringent entry rules and could influence how Indian tourists plan their visits to this favored Asian destination. Under the new guidelines, Indian citizens will need to either secure a Visa on Arrival (VoA) when they arrive in Thailand or apply for an e-Visa before their trip. The VoA permits a stay of up to 15 days per entry, a significant reduction from the previous 60-day allowance.

Travelers looking to avoid the hassle of airport queues can opt for Thailand’s official e-Visa system, applying online ahead of their journey. Industry experts suggest that these changes might deter spur-of-the-moment travel and short-notice holiday bookings due to the added paperwork, application procedures, and associated fees. Nevertheless, Thailand is likely to remain an appealing destination for Indian tourists given its affordability, well-connected flights, and rich tourism offerings.

The updated visa rules are anticipated to have a more pronounced impact on long-stay visitors, digital nomads, and those planning extensive multi-city holidays. Travelers seeking longer, more flexible stays might start considering other Southeast Asian destinations that provide easier entry options. Thai authorities have announced that these new regulations will take effect 15 days after being published in the Royal Gazette, with travelers arriving before that date still subject to the previous rules for the duration of their entry permit.

Thailand had initially broadened its visa-free access in 2024 to boost tourism and drive economic recovery post-pandemic, a strategy that successfully increased visitor numbers and solidified the country’s reputation as a top choice for leisure travel, family vacations, and special events. However, officials now cite concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the need for enhanced immigration monitoring as reasons for the change. The new visa framework aims to strike a balance between promoting tourism and maintaining robust border management and oversight.

Prospective travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the latest visa requirements and entry procedures before booking their flights and accommodations to ensure a seamless travel experience to Thailand. The adjustments in visa policy underscore the importance of staying current with entry guidelines, particularly for those with flexible travel plans or those considering longer stays.
