Modi Criticizes Misplaced Blame on Developing Nations for Carbon Emissions

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s commitment to combating climate change and defended developing countries’ roles in global carbon emissions during his speech at the International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” held in New Delhi. Modi highlighted that India’s per capita carbon emissions are significantly lower than the global average, countering the perception that developing nations are the main contributors to global emissions.

Addressing delegates on Saturday, Modi underscored India’s achievements in renewable energy, specifically noting that the country has met its Paris Agreement commitments ahead of schedule. He pointed to strides made in expanding non-fossil fuel capacity and the growth of solar energy as evidence of India’s proactive environmental strategies.

The two-day conference, organized by the National Green Tribunal and running from September 19 to 20, gathered judges, governmental officials, environmental experts, and legal representatives from various countries. The event aims to tackle pressing environmental and climate challenges, including policy implementation gaps, environmental justice, and fostering institutional cooperation.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged in four technical sessions designed to address key environmental issues and to develop strategic approaches to future climate challenges. The focus was on crafting solutions and enhancing collaborative efforts to address the complex dynamics of climate change.
