In a clear sign of the times, Levi’s UK has officially listed US politics as a business risk. The company has warned in its financial accounts that the policies of the Trump administration could fuel an anti-American sentiment that negatively impacts its sales in Britain.
The warning was included in the “risks and uncertainties” section, placing it on par with traditional challenges like competition and inflation. This comes despite a strong year for the brand, which saw its UK sales grow to £96.8 million and its pre-tax profits rise by 23%.
The company’s concern is backed by market data. Tesla, another symbol of American industry, saw its UK sales fall by more than half in July, a potential indicator of a broader trend. Similar consumer movements to boycott US goods have been observed in Canada.
The political risk stems from the Trump administration’s disruptive trade policies. These policies are now facing a major legal challenge within the US, as a federal appeals court has declared the tariffs mostly illegal. This ruling is expected to be appealed, creating ongoing uncertainty.
